Jackson County Chancery Court
The Jackson County Chancery Court is Mississippi’s court of equity for Jackson County. It handles domestic relations, estate matters, and other proceedings that historically fell within the jurisdiction of courts of equity rather than courts of law.
What the Chancery Court Handles
The Chancery Court has jurisdiction over a broad range of matters, including:
- Divorce and legal separation
- Child custody and child support
- Property division in domestic proceedings
- Adoption
- Guardianship and conservatorship
- Estates of deceased persons, with or without a will
- Matters involving minors and their property
- Title disputes involving real property
- Injunctions and other equitable relief
- Contract disputes seeking equitable remedies
- Commitments of persons with mental illness or impairment
- Youth court proceedings in counties without a separate family or county court
Chancery Court cases are generally heard by the Chancellor without a jury. Juries are permitted only in paternity cases and will contests. An advisory jury may be requested in other cases but its verdict is not binding on the Chancellor.
